| When mature, this beautiful palm is quite happy outside in most parts of the UK and will withstand temperatures as low as -15-20C. It is best grown in a sheltered, sunny position. Removing the lowest tier of leaves (and spent flowering stems after fruiting) on mature plants each year in spring will keep the plant tidy - otherwise there is little to do but admire its beauty! | ||||||||||||
| Sowing and/or growing instructions | ||||||||||||
| Scarify and/or soak seeds for 1-3 days in tepid water, changing water daily. Sow at once in good quality, slightly gritty compost and place in a cold frame. After 4-6 weeks place in a propagator at about 20-25C. Germination should occur in about 4-8 weeks. When large enough to handle, transfer seedlings into individual pots and grow them on, keeping under glass for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Young plants may benefit from some protection from the cold for at least their first winter outdoors. |
